Bastille is making their 2021 return with the dystopic new single “Distorted Light Beam,” a gleaming, metallic rush of retro-futuristic pop, and the first offering from the band’s upcoming studio release set for shelves and streaming later this year.
Hear it below and all day today on your favorite Audacy stations.
The track arrives along with a cinematic music video starring British actress Remmie Milner from the award-winning series Save Me, and of course, frontman Dan Smith, which shows a newly developed technology called "Futurescape" transform life as we know it -- a reflection on how we are all changing and the ways in which we can manipulate our realities to fit a narrative that better suits us.
Discussing the new single which was co-written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, Smith (joined by bandmates Kyle Simmons, Will Farquarson, and Chris Wood) tells us the new track is meaningful to him as it's "the beginning of a new era for our band."
The song itself "came from a zoom writing session," he explains, "and kind of evolved from there. So, I guess it's kind of appropriate for the new era of our music, to have something done via technology. I hope [fans] feel surprised pleasantly, I hope they feel excitement, and escapism... and I hope they get where we're going with this song and the new album. I hope that they're up for it and want to come along with us on that weird, futuristic journey."
Experimenting with the Bastille sound since their last album Doom Days in 2019, the band released the Goosebumps EP last summer, featuring Graham Coxon of Blur on "WHAT YOU GONNA DO???" and producer Kenny Beats on the title track, as they continued to pen songs that seek to understand and offer an escape from the modern human condition.
In other news, Bastille was the subject of a documentary released in January of 2021. Titled ReOrchestrated, the film provides an honest look into the band’s journey, framed through their ReOrchestrated shows, and takes on the topics of motivation, anxiety, and imposter syndrome. An EP titled Roots of ReOrchestrated was also offered along with the doc.
This summer, Bastille is set to perform new music on Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series on August 23. Overseas, they're also scheduled to headline the U.K.s Latitude Festival and Standon Calling festivals, as well as two sold-out shows at Hampton Court Palace Festival in August.
