The NHL is wasting no time promoting its unique new partnership with Green Day. Fans began their day by reading this official tweet from The Stanley Cup account: “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
The league used the American Idiot track as a reminder that the real season starts in October, and the puck drops tonight with a slate of four games.
The cross-promotion deal between the NHL and Green Day isn’t like anything we’ve ever seen before. The centerpiece of the partnership is NBCSN’s “Wednesday Night Hockey” theme song. “Fire, Ready, Aim” from Green Day’s forthcoming album will kick off the broadcast all season long. The band teased the track for the first time when the partnership was announced, and it will premiere on October 9th. The NHL is hoping “Fire, Ready, Aim” becomes its version of the NFL’s “Are You Ready for Some Football.”
That’s not all though. Songs from Father Of All Motherf******, due out February 7, will be featured in NHL game highlights, broadcast bumpers, ad campaigns and in arenas across the league. Green Day will also perform live at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game in St. Louis.
"Green Day is the perfect band for the NHL. Their music fits so perfectly with the energy, speed and power that we witness on the ice and each and every night," said NHL Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President Steve Mayer. "We are so excited to start this partnership with the NBC Sports open. It was so much fun to shoot and we think our fans will love it."
Green Day added, "This NHL season is hereby known as LOUD season... where the toughest athletes to ever lace up a pair of skates meet the baddest rock band on the planet. So turn up the volume on your TV sets, fire, ready, aim and enjoy the ride."
Following the release of their 13th studio album, Green Day will join forces with Weezer and Fall Out Boy for the HELLA MEGA stadium tour. It kicks off July 17 in Seattle and runs through August 29 in Philadelphia.
