New Mom Grimes Selling a Piece of Her Soul for Art Project

The piece was originally going to be listed for $10 million

You’ve heard of musicians putting their instruments, memorabilia, and other items up for sale, but Grimes is taking it to a whole new level.

Grimes is holding her first online art exhibition consisting of drawings, photographs, digital prints, conceptual art, and other pieces of art she’s created. One work has garnered considerable attention. The piece is called Selling Out and it’s a contract by which the purchaser acquires a piece of Grimes’s soul.

“The idea of fantastical art in the form of legal documents just seems very intriguing to me,” she told Bloomberg in an interview.

The piece was originally going to be listed for $10 million to make it nearly impossible to sell. Then COVID-19 happened. Due to the global recession, Grimes had second thoughts about the price and decided to make it available for the “best offer.”

“I didn’t want anyone to buy it, so I said we should just make it $10 million and then it probably won’t sell,” she said. “With the current state of the world, do you want to put something up for $10 million?”

Grimes has been making art longer than she’s been making music saying “I see myself as a visual artist first and foremost, and I’ve always felt strange that people know me for music.”

Her exhibit is running online on Gallery Platform Los Angeles from May 28 through June 3 and Maccarone Los Angeles from May 28 through Aug. 31.

Her pieces are divided up into three different categories. First, her print reproductions are limited to 30 each at $500 a piece. Her ink-on-paper drawings range from $2,000 to $3,000 with many coming from her notebook. Finally, there’s her digital avatar WarNymph featured in pigment prints ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

Earlier this month, Grimes and Elon Musk shared the first photo of their new baby, and continued a very public debate about his name.
