Granger Smith and wife Amber are finding the silver lining in the tragic passing of their son. Their three-year-old son River Smith died of an accidental drowning early last month, and the couple has been trying to find ways to push through ever since.
Along with donating hundreds of thousands to the hospital that tried to save River, Granger and Amber also agreed to donate River’s organs in hopes they could save someone else. It turns out, that hope came true twofold. In a new Instagram post, Amber revealed that River’s donated organs saved two adult lives.
“I’ve always known I wanted to be a donor if anything were to ever happen to me,” Amber wrote. “I just felt that if I had viable organs, why would I go into the ground with them? My spirit would be in Heaven, so why not save a life if I could? Never in a million years did I think I would be making that decision for my baby.”
Her caption details the heartbreaking process of having to decide to donate while River was still hanging on. After making the incredibly tough decision, the couple was soon met with great news.
“We got the letter that our tiny, red-headed hero gave life to 2 adults. A 49 year old woman and a 53 year old man. I cried when we opened it. Cried out of sadness & cried out of love,” Amber wrote.
She finished her note by stressing that 113,000 people are waiting for organ donations, and 20 people die every day. Visit OrganDonor.gov to see how you can help.
