Armie Hammer quits Jennifer Lopez movie amid social media scandal

Armie Hammer will not be Jennifer Lopez’s leading man.

Hammer has dropped out of co-starring with Lopez in the upcoming action comedy “Shotgun Wedding,” according to Variety.

“Given the imminent start date of ‘Shotgun Wedding’, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision,” a production spokesperson told the outlet. The role will now be recast, but no replacement has been announced.

The news comes after alleged social media messages that were reportedly Hammer’s were leaked online. The messages have not been verified for their authenticity but were graphic and sexually explicit, according to the New York Post.

The 34-year-old “Call Me By Your Name” star addressed the controversy in a statement about his decision to exit the production.

“I’m not responding to these bull**** claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that,” Hammer said in his statement, per Deadline.

According to a synopsis, “Shotgun Wedding” follows Darcy (Lopez) and Tom (previously set to be played by Hammer), as they gather their opinionated families for a destination wedding.  The couple begin to get cold feet as a hostage situation takes place, forcing Darcy and Tom to save their families.

Jason Moore (“Pitch Perfect’) is set to direct, while Ryan Reynolds, who was attached to star at one point, is executive producing the movie.

Hammer was most recently seen in the Netflix movie “Rebecca” and will appear in the upcoming thriller “Death on the Nile.”
