Jai Rodriguez Is Celebrating the 17th Anniversary of Queer Eye and Hosting the Daytime EMMYs

The original fab five member is doing it all

As the legendary hit reality series, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy celebrates its seventeenth anniversary, original fab five member, Jai Rodriguez celebrated the groundbreaking series with RADIO.COM's Shira Lazar and Ryan Mitchell on CHANNEL Q’s Let’s Go There.

The actor, singer, TV personality, and former co-host on CHANNEL Q, explains that when the show first aired he and the other original fab five members, Thom FiliciaCarson KressleyTed Allen, and Kyan Douglas had never suspected the show to take off the way it did. Jai exclaims, “all the sudden my whole life had changed… they kind of edited us to be gay superheroes.”

Queer Eye For The Straight Guy made television history for having the first out, all gay cast on network TV. However, Rodriguez emphasizes, “it was really the first time that so many gay people saw themselves seen, and in many ways conservative households that didn’t know gay people, they were happy to welcome five [gay people] into their most intimate spaces.”

In regards to the show’s reboot, Queer Eye, Jai is happy to see that the fab five legacy has shifted to fit society now. “There was a certain idea that was always kind of pushed on me… this idea of style, taste, and class being aspirational… I like how this new cast and the idea and theme of it is really about being your most authentic self,” explains the original culture guide.

After creating history with his role on the hit Bravo reality show, Jai has gone on to several achievements and milestones. This weekend Rodriguez is hosting the digital award show for the Daytime Emmys.

This year the Daytime Emmys have been split into three different digital live streams due to the pandemic. The academy looked to the broadway actor to host the stream focused on digital dramas. This stream airs Sunday, July 19th at 9 PM ET/ 6 PM PT. You can stream on TVs, phones, and tablets at TheEmmys.tv.
