Full of personal legal intrigue, the promo clip ends with Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) stating, “Whatever happens, we’re gonna take it one step at a time,” then a quick pan to Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), driving, who looks down to see them holding hands.

For “SVU” fans, this very quaint form of affection explodes with romantic possibilities viewers have pondered for years, as Benson and Stabler have become the show’s central tension, but have never so much as, well, held hands.

As Today reminds us, for the first 12 seasons of "SVU," before Stabler's abrupt departure, the partners on the force endured more traumatic and personal events than most couples.” But that never turned into an actual romantic relationship, even after Stabler’s wife Kathy filed for divorce.

Meloni recently came back to the series, and the Kathy character (spoiler alert) was killed off. So the table seems to be set for some romance between the two intense detectives.

Heightening the possible plot twist, "SVU" showrunner Warren Leight recently tweeted he and one of the show's executive producers had dinner with Hargitay, Meloni, and "Organized Crime" showrunner, Ilene Chaiken, and discussed the future of Benson and Stabler's relationship.

Longtime fans are understandably freaking out on Twitter.

"Hi just to reiterate there are hands being held at the end of this promo and I will be there until Dec 9..." one fan tweeted.

Said another, "The way this .02 second clip of a hand hold has me in an absolute CHOKEHOLD," one person tweeted.

"I really don’t think I’ve EVER been so excited about a HAND-HOLD!!!!" tweeted another. "That’s the power of #EO #Bensler for you! December 9th feels like a lifetime away."

Admittedly, fans might also hold their hand-holding horses, as earlier, NBC shared a previous episode’s promo that showed Stabler knocking on Benson's apartment door and sharing a close moment near a couch. That ended up being a tease, as it turned out Stabler had been drugged and was in an impaired state; and generally the scene didn’t exactly offer the kind of payoff fans have pined for.

Whether that payoff comes soon, well, NBC isn’t doing that much hand-holding with this trailer -- you’ll have to watch when the crossover event airs on December 9th at 9pm ET.
