Before taking on her record-breaking role on “Law & Order: SVU,” Mariska Hargitay was almost a queen.
The 55-year-old has revealed she was set to star as a warrior queen named Dulcea in the 1995 film “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” but was ultimately fired and recast, according to “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I was so excited because I was going to Australia to play this queen. I get there, hair, makeup, prosthetic pieces, walking around like that feeling pretty good,” Hargitay recounted while appearing on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
But her excitement soon turned as production delays threatened to hijack her holiday plans back in the United States.
“I was there for November, and then December and then we were getting closer to Christmas and they had me on hold a lot,” she said. “And finally around December 21st, I said, ‘Hey guys, this is great, but you kept me on hold too long.’ It’s Christmas! I think that’s only fair.”
After spending time at home for Christmas and New Years, Hargitay phoned the set to say she was ready to return. The response was not what she was expecting.
She continued, “They’re like, ‘Sweetie, you’re good, don’t worry about it.’ And they fired me ...because I wanted to go home for Christmas and be with my family.”
The incident turned out to be a life lesson as she jokingly added, “I watch my P’s and Q’s on SVU now.”
A few years after her unceremonious firing, Hargitay landed the role of a lifetime as Detective Olivia Benson on “SVU.”
Hargitay now holds the record for TV's longest-running character on the longest-running live-action prime-time series in television history. And as of the show’s 21st season, her character is now Captain Olivia Benson.
Looks like she still wound up a queen.
