Prince William Jokes That He and Kate Middleton Are ‘Spreading Coronavirus’

Prince William was caught making a joke about the deadly coronavirus during a royal tour of Ireland.

While speaking with emergency workers at the Guiness Storehouse in Dublin, the Duke of Cambridge appeared to make light of the hysteria that has grown over the spread of COVID-19.

“I bet everyone’s like, ‘I’ve got coronavirus, I’m dying,’ and you’re like, ‘No, you’ve just got a cough,'” William could be heard telling paramedic Joe Mooney in video footage, posted by Time.

He added, “It does seem quite dramatic about coronavirus at the moment. Is it being a little hyped up, do you think, by the media?”

Although it’s unclear how Mooney responded, William could later be heard jokingly suggesting he and Kate Middleton are among those infected with the virus.

“By the way, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are spreading coronavirus!” he said while smiling. “Sorry! We’re keeping an eye on that, so do tell us if we need to stop!”

But another member of the royal family isn’t taking any chances with the viral outbreak.

On Tuesday, Queen Elizabeth was seen wearing gloves during an investiture ceremony, something she hasn’t done in over 60 years, according to the New York Post.

While it's not uncommon for Her Majesty to don gloves at public engagements, she hasn’t worn them to hand out knighthoods since 1954. A palace spokesman wouldn’t comment on whether the 93-year-old wore them in as a preventative health measure.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are currently in the midst of a three-day tour of Ireland and are expected to return to England on Thursday.

According to the UK's Department of Health and Social Care, there are currently 85 people in the UK who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Around the world, there have been more than 94,000 infections and 3,200 deaths.
