"We don't have a script yet!" Witherspoon, 45, said of the film, which is being written by Mindy Kaling.
"Mindy’s busy. Mindy's working hard on it," Witherspoon assured the outlet. "I know she is. And she and I just love each other. We have a great laugh just thinking about, 'What would Elle Woods be doing right now?'"
Witherspoon did the interview beside her "The Morning Show" co-star Jennifer Aniston. The two co-starred and worked as producing partners on the Apple TV+ series.
"She's a little busy, by the way," Aniston, 52, said of her co-star.
Aniston later asked Witherspoon how the character of Elle Woods may have evolved since the first "Legally Blonde" was released two decades ago in 2001.
"So many things have changed, but then some things are just so similar," Witherspoon said.
Witherspoon took to social media to share her excitement.
“Some things are just meant to be! I’m SOOO excited to have @mindykaling and @djgoor writing Legally Blonde 3!,” she tweeted. “This is #ElleWoodsApproved!”
Back in 2018, Witherspoon confirmed news that a third installment was in the works.
This past July, the Oscar winner celebrated the original film's 20th anniversary with a fun video.
"“This feels like a good time for some #LegallyBlonde trivia.... fire away! 💕👇🏽,” she captioned the clip of herself soaking up the sun while drifting on a pool float in the same pink sequined bikini that Elle wore in her Harvard admissions video.
