"Star Trek" is easily one of the most popular and legendary franchises in all of movies and television, and even the most fringe of observers have seen at least one episode.

Would it surprise you to learn that Captain Kirk himself is not one of them?

In a new interview, William Shatner admitted he has never seen an episode of the classic series explaining that it's "too painful" to watch himself on screen.

"I have never watched Star Trek," the 90-year-old told People. "There are many episodes I don't know, there are some movies I don't know. I directed one of the movies — No. 5 — I had to watch that one. But it's all painful because I don't like the way I look and what I do."

Shatner made the exception for the 1989 film "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," but only because he directed it.

"I directed one of the movies — No. 5 — I had to watch that one," he added. "But it's all painful because I don't like the way I look and what I do."

Shatner portrayed Captain James T. Kirk during the show's three seasosn from 1966 through 1969. He reprised the role in seven of the films, most recently appearing in "Star Trek Generations" in 1994.
