It’s official, Alicia Keys and John Legend are set to go head-to-head in the next Verzuz battle this Friday, June 19 in celebration of Juneteenth — a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Verzuz co-founder and Keys’ husband Swizz Beatz confirmed that the two virtuosoes of the ivory keys will square off behind their instrument of choice.
An Instagram post from the official Verzuz account read “Let’s celebrate Juneteenth with a special edition #Verzuz! @AliciaKeys vs @JohnLegend on the (piano emoji) Friday, June 19th | 8PM EST”
A battle between these two was initially brought up in May by the “All of Me” singer during an interview with Nick Cannon.
“I think that’d probably be the best thing,” Legend said. “And, honestly, I think we would do it. If we did it, [it would be] like a dueling piano thing… I think we will.”
And just a few weeks later, they are. Legend kept his word and took to Twitter to share his excitement about Friday’s face off.
“Let’s celebrate Juneteenth with a special edition,” he wrote, calling it a “battle of the pianos.”
So far we’ve seen epic match-ups like Babyface and Teddy Riley, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Nelly and Ludacris, and more. With both R&B legends having a laundry list of accolades including Alicia Keys' 15 GRAMMYs and John Legend being one of only 15 artists in history to have collected an EGOT (Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar, and Tony award). You definitely don’t want to miss this one.
The inevitable joy that will come from these two formidable opponents is bound to be both unforgettable and inspirational, which is something we all could use right now.
