Last night, Brandy and Monica were officially inducted to the roster of epic Verzuz battles. The singers faced off in a hit-for-hit battle for a total of 20 rounds, spanning over 3 hours and reaching an astonishing 1.2 million viewers.
The two shared stories, discussed their long spanning feud, while singing along to each other’s songs and expressing their mutual admiration. “I really am a straight shooter and I really do admire what you do musically,” Monica said during one exchange, prompting Brandy to reply, “I just need you to know that I have the utmost love and respect for you, no matter the times where it seemed like I didn’t.”
Monica even shared a new track called “Trenches” featuring Lil Baby, and the evening ended with their 1998 hit “The Boy Is Mine” and drum roll please, the promise of an upcoming tour. Say what!?
But before all that, the ladies started off the evening with a special tribute to Chadwick Boseman, and had a special guest virtually stop by, who you ask? Oh, just Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris! Kamala took the opportunity to thank the duo for supporting Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote campaign, as Brandy and Monica curated special battle merch, with all proceeds going to the organization.
“I just wanted to thank you ladies, you queens, you stars, you icons for doing this for When We All Vote, it’s so important.” Harris said. “You both have used your voice in such a powerful way, and an extension of our voices is our vote.”
After Kamala bid them adieu, it was time for the ladies to again use those voices, but this time to battle it out (but like in a respectful and supportive way).
So just to quickly run down some of the epic moments, lets start at the top.
Brandy kicked things off with her Darkchild-produced 2002 Full Moon banger "What About Us?" Monica responded by serving up an equally memorable record, her 2010 ballad "Everything to Me.” If we had to pick a winner, for us it’s Brandy, because we came to bop our shoulders and a slow jam makes that difficult to do.
The ladies kept bringing the hits, jumping around to different decades and albums, and for round 14, they each delivered us with classic R&B bops that made it hard to pick a winner. Monica unleashed her 90s Jermaine Dupri-produced record "The First Night”. As Brandy took it back to the early 00s with her Afrodisiac single "Who Is She 2 U” produced by Verzuz co-founder Timbaland.
So many celebs tuned in to catch the R&B jam fest including Michelle Obama, Mariah Carey, Tiffany Haddish, and Zayn Malik, who all had something to say in the comments section. Others who joined in, Solange Knowles, Tyler the Creator, Snoop Dogg and more.
