Lil Nas X Explains Why He Came Out on HBO's 'The Shop'

The “Old Town Road” singer shares his story with Kevin Hart and more

Inside the barber shop for HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted, Lil Nas X shares why it was important to come out as gay at the moment he did.

Telling his story to Kevin Hart, NBA star Kevin Love, and show creator Paul Rivera on the unfiltered show, the “Old Town Road” singer explains the timing of his announcement, and the impact he hoped it would have.

“It’s not that it’s like being forced, it’s just knowing that growing up, I’m growing up to hate this s***,” he explains, as Kevin Hart looks on with confusion. “Hate what?” asks Hart.

“Homosexuality. Gay people,” X answers back. “Come on now. If you really from the hood you know,” he quiets Hart, as someone shouts, “it’s a stigma.”

“If for me, the cool dude with the song on top of everything to say this, any other time I’m doing this for attention in my eyes, but if you doing this while you’re at the top you know it’s for real.”

“It’s showing, it doesn’t really matter I guess.”

Lil Nas X revealed that he was gay on the last day of June, at the conclusion of Pride Month and during his historic run at the top of the Billboard Chart. "Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more" he wrote in a tweet, accompanied by a rainbow emoji. "But before this month ends I want y’all to listen closely to c7osure."

The song about breaking boundaries he had set for himself, announced a new beginning for the star. He continued on to carry “Old Town Road” to be the longest-running number one song in history.
