If you’re going to take a ride with Nelly at the AMAs tonight, be prepared for a throwback that’ll make it feel like you’re hearing “Country Grammar” for the very first time.
Nelly is one of the many performers at the 2020 American Music Awards and is ready to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his debut record Country Grammar. “Twenty years of celebrating a musical project is beyond belief,” Nelly said.
“Hopefully we can give ‘em exactly what they were feeling at the time whenever they first went out and supported the record,” Nelly said of his AMAs performance. “We’re just going to have fun with it. Again, it’s a celebration of allowing Nelly to be twenty years and to be here doing what he’s doing.”
In other words, prepare for a party.
The AMAs also present another opportunity for the rapper. A chance to sway potential Dancing With The Stars voters. Nelly made it safely through final rounds and will find himself taking part in the DWTS finale on November 23.
It begs the question, will Nelly use his AMAs appearance to showcase his dance moves? “Probably not,” he laughs.
“[It’s] another situation where I want to thank the fans for riding with their boy. Don’t forget to vote Monday, I need that!”
Like all of us, Nelly is looking forward to turning the calendar to 2021. Outside of 2020 finally being over, Nelly has another reason for excitement. He’s got a new EP on the way. The Heartland EP marks the latest release for Nelly and once again he teamed up with Country stars Florida Georgia Line on the new song “Lil Bit.”
“The Heartland EP is not a Country album, but it’s Country influenced,” he says. “I would never say that Nelly’s coming out doing a Country album. I respect Country music, I respect the artists too much to think I could just wake up one day and do it.”
Still, Nelly’s not afraid to show off his love of the genre. “What I can do is do an album and show the love that I have and how Country music has influenced Nelly.”
