On August 26, MTV will honor Missy Elliott with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards.
Since first breaking through in 1997 with “The Rain,” Elliott has become a video visionary by creating a unique style all her own, pushing boundaries and always entertaining with some of the most vivid clips in history. The first female Hip Hop artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame has matched her musical skills with supreme storytelling and more than a few mind-bending moments. With the help of directors like Dave Myers and Hype Williams, the GRAMMY-winner has churned out iconic visuals unlike any other artist.
Elliott will perform at the VMAs for the first time in 16 years, with a set packed with some of her biggest hits from the past 20-plus years. “Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” a representative from MTV International says in a statement to Variety. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”
