All the Best Reactions to Eminem's Surprise Oscars Performance

The rapper takes the stage years later with his award-winning song

If you had one shot or one opportunity to appear at the Oscars, would you capture it or just let it slip? Eminem chose the latter, deciding to duck out on the 75th Academy Awards back in 2003 when “Lose Yourself” won Best Original Song. Years later, the rapper popped up on the Oscars stage, performing the song and shocking viewers everywhere.

“Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity... Thanks for having me @TheAcademy,” he wrote on Twitter after the performance, along with the video of one of his collaborators accepting the award back in 2003. “Sorry it took me 18 years to get here.”

Some of the best reactions to Marshall Mathers making a return to the Oscars happened inside the theater on Sunday night, with Martin Scorsese appearing to nod off during the award-winning hit, and Billie Eilish keeping her curious look for the song. Frozen star Idina Menzel looked equal-parts perplexed and enthused, as Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran rapped along from her seat.

Eminem beat out Paul Simon, U2, and more when he won Best Original Song at the 2003 ceremony. This year the category belonged to Elton John, who won for the second time thanks to his song from the biopic Rocketman. Eminem and Elton have been longtime friends, with the rapper crediting the singer for helping him through addiction struggles. Backstage they caught up for a moment and shared a photo.
