The Weeknd Takes the Stage on TikTok and Debuts a New Song

The app's 'first-ever interactive augmented reality broadcast'

It all went down Friday night, The Weeknd took viewers on TikTok to another dimension "on an epic After Hours journey" and gifted during The Weeknd Experience, the app’s “first-ever interactive augmented reality” livestream broadcast.

The virtual performance spanned 20 minutes and featured state-of-the-art 3D visuals and interactive voting, allowing an audience of over 230,000 to chose certain outcomes. Throughout the set, viewers watched the set from an audience’s perspective and had a say in which songs The Weeknd would play.

If you didn’t have a chance to check out the performance, allow us to paint you a picture. The Weeknd, in avatar form of course, emerged onto the virtual stage out of a fiery blaze, decked out in a red jacked and oversized sunglasses that by now have become synonymous with his latest album, After Hours. As a three-dimensional meteor shower surrounded him, his collab track with Kendrick Lamar, “Pray For Me,” began to play. Along with the first prompt, for viewers to comment on what the background should feature next.

After a selection was made he gifted fans with a 30-second snippet of an untitled new song, similar sounding to his earlier more stripped-down projects, before segueing into his TikTok hit “Blinding Lights,” followed by another prompt. This time the audience had decide whether or not The Weeknd should lick a frog that hopped it’s way over to the singer. Obviously the the comments section filled with a resounding “yes,” wanting our Starboy to go on a psychedelic trip, naturally he, well his animated form, obliged.

From there, he was joined on the virtual stage by Doja Cat also in avatar form, cat costume and all, for her “In Your Eyes” remix. Before the virtual concert concluded Abel hit us with “Save Your Tears,” and then just like that he was off, zooming through space in his convertible and out of our sights and screens.

If you’re looking for a little more than a description, you can always check out a fan upload of the virtual performance below.

And if you’re looking for a token to remember “The Weekend Experience” for years to come exclusive merchandise for the concert is available, with all proceeds benefitting the Equal Justice Initiative, on The Weeknd’s website.
