The depths of Prince’s vaunted archives are still unknown, but fans will soon be able to access his entire catalog on an unlikely source. TikTok.
The popular social media video app struck a deal with the Prince estate to bring the legendary musician’s entire catalog to their service. As one of the most popular apps amongst younger users, the social media giant is hoping to introduce his music to a new generation of fans.
“Prince was known for breaking boundaries and TikTok has proven to do so as well. With the addition of Prince’s full catalogue on TikTok, it is our hope that a new generation of global fans can find meaning in Prince’s music, and be inspired to create,” Troy Carter, the Entertainment Advisor of the Prince estate said in a statement.
TikTok users are now able to create videos soundtracked by Prince’s music. Aside from the catalog addition, TikTok will also be holding specialty programming in coordination with Prince’s estate including a livestream tour of Paisley Park. The tour will be guided by legacy preservationist Mitch Maguire giving viewers an inside look at Paisley Park.
The announcement comes almost on the exact same date that Prince released his legendary album Purple Rain 36 years ago. The app is featuring a special Purple Rain creative filter enabling users to accent their videos with Prince flair.
Earlier on this week, one of Prince’s most famous electric guitars was sold at an auction for $563,000. The “Blue Angel” guitar was the same one Prince used during his Purple Rain, Parade, Sign O’ the Times, and Lovesexy tours.
