SpongeBob Squarepants is getting the CGI treatment with a new movie coming from Paramount called “Sponge on the Run.”
Paramount tweeted the news, saying, “GARY’S BEEN SNAILNAPPED! Will SpongeBob and Patrick be able to #SaveGary?,” with a link to the official trailer. The movie is the sequel to the 2015 movie “Sponge Out of Water.”
The trailer shows the moment when SpongeBob met Gary the Snail for the first time. Sometime while chronicling their friendship, Gary goes missing. The trailer then features a flustered SpongeBob as he recruits Patrick to help him find his lost snail. They find themselves in Atlantic City, all across Bikini Bottom, and even face-to-face with Keanu Reeves.
This isn’t the only SpongeBob news in the works, as rumor has it that Netflix and Nickelodeon may be pairing up to create a series based off of Squidward, the iconic, grumpy octopus from the show.
Netflix has recently added other Nickelodeon favorites to their repertoire including “Victorious” and “Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie.” With the recent launch of Disney+, featuring over 500 film titles and over 7,500 TV episodes of family favorites, Netflix’s deal with Nickelodeon could be just what they need to keep themselves on the streaming service map.
"Sponge on the Run" is set to hit theaters in May of 2020.
