EXCLUSIVE: Celebrating National Sisters Day With Tegan and Sara

The always awesome duo share some sister stories

August 4th is National Sisters Day, and who better to celebrate with than our favorite twin rock star sisters, Tegan and Sara. The “Everything Is Awesome” duo will release their ninth studio album, Hey, I’m Just Like You, on September 27. They also will share their origin story in their first memoir, High School, due out on September 24.

“Sara and I are identical twins, we think,” Tegan tells us in the exclusive interview above. “I say we think because my parents did smoke a lot of pot, before we came, not when they were pregnant with us.”

“I actually met some L.A. County Corners who were telling me that we should get tested because there’s a possibility that we’re not identical twins” she laughs. “So one placenta, maybe? I don’t know. I’ve never asked. I don’t even want to ask. I don’t want to know that piece of information. What kind of question is that.”

As the pair prepares to share the story of growing up together, we managed to squeeze out a few sisterly memories just in time for this totally real, not just online, holiday. Sisters share a special bond, one that’s especially weird and beautiful for Tegan and Sara.

“Tegan was the one who had a looser grip on reality until we were in our twenties,” Sara states plainly as her twin looks on. “I desperately wanted an imaginary friend, and a best friend, or for my sister to talk to me” Tegan shoots back.

“I went through this whole phase where I dressed as a clown,” Tegan laughs. “Which I think says a ton about my mental state. Just saying.”

“I was reading Stephen King in the living room, listening to Michael Jackson, and Tegan was like, ‘I’m ready to do my clown routine if you want to come into the living room. Please follow me.’ I have pictures” Sara offers.

Tegan outgrew her clown phase, we think, along with some other details from their childhood rooms.

“Growing up I had a shocking amount of men on my walls,” Tegan explains as Sara snickers. “Every inch of my room was covered in men. All men, like soap opera stars from Young and the Restless, Jared Leto, Beck, everybody” she exclaims.

“My favorite band was Nirvana and so Kurt Cobain was everywhere and that made sense, and Courtney Love and Claire Danes were also allowed to be on the wall, but otherwise it was just men. Shirtless men.”

“And Winona Ryder” interjects Sara.

“Yeah, Winona Ryder was in there a few times, but just so many half-naked men,” Tegan continues. “It’s really crazy, and I still don’t understand why.”

Tegan and Sara continue to fight for the rights of LGBTQ women with their Tegan And Sara Foundation. You can learn more about these amazing twins in their memoir, High School, on September 24.
