Charli XCX caught the attention of Swifties everywhere on Tuesday, when comments from the singer about her time on the Reputation Stadium Tour, seemed to slight her experience with Taylor Swift and her fans.
“I’m really grateful that Taylor asked me on that tour,” Charli said in an interview with Pitchfork. “But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.”

The “1999” singer opened for Swift in over 50 stadiums, often being the first of three sets in front of Camila Cabello and Swift. “I’ve done so much of it, and it really cemented my status as this underdog character, which I like now,” she continued. “But I need to just own my own f***ing s*** finally.”
This hit a nerve with Swifties, who were quick to call out the comments.
Feeling the internet heart, Charli XCX was attempted to clarify, writing a lengthy note and sharing it Tuesday afternoon.
“I want to clarify there is absolutely no shade and only love here” she wrote. “My answers about this tour were boiled down into one kind of weird sentence – leading up to that tour I’d been playing a ton of 18+ club shows and so to be on stage in front of all ages was new to me and made me approach my performances with a whole new kind of energy.”
“It was brilliant opening for Taylor, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was given and how much fun it was to perform to a new audience.”
Charli XCX will release her third album, Charli, on September 13. She will also embark on a headlining tour starting on September 20.
