Dean Martin's Daughter Calls John Legend's 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' Remake 'Absolutely Absurd'

Deana Martin reacts to the latest version of the song her father helped make famous

John Legend has yet to release his update on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” and already the critics are out with their reaction. The latest is Deana Martin, whose father’s Dean Martin helped popularize the song with his 1959 version of the Academy Award-winning Christmas classic.

“You do not change the lyrics to the song,” said Martin during an interview with Good Morning Britan. “He’s made it more sexual with those words that he has just said.”

Legend revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair last week, that he has teamed up with Kelly Clarkson to deliver a more consenting edition of the song originally written in 1944. “What will my friends think,” Clarkson sings in the call-and-response tune. “I think they should rejoice,” Legend responds. “If I have one more drink?” answers Kelly. “It’s your body, and your choice,” assures John in the lyrics released during the interview.

“It is absolutely absurd,” Martin continues. “I think what he’s done is, he’s stealing the thunder from Frank Loesser’s song and from my Dad. He should write his own song if he doesn’t like this one. But don’t change the lyrics. It’s a classic, perfect song.”

Host Piers Morgan goes on to ask Deana what her father would have thought of this new version, set to be released on the deluxe edition of Legend’s A Legendary Christmas. “He’d say it’s absurd,” she says. “I think that John should have just left it alone.”

The updated lyrics to “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” were created with the help of Natasha Rothwell from HBO’s Insecure, and offer a different version of events from the song many consider out-of-touch and out-of-date. A Legendary Christmas: The Deluxe Edition from John Legend arrives on November 8, with pre-orders now available.
