Julia Michaels and FINNEAS helped Demi Lovato's 'Commander In Chief' come to life

The song debuted Wednesday night at the BBMAs

Demi Lovato has a message for the president and she’s sharing it the best way she knows how, in a song “Commander In Chief,” which she debuted with a powerful performance at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards.

Co-written with Julia Michaels, FINNEAS, Justin Tranter and Eren Cannata, the ballad, makes a bold political statement, with intent to urge fans and anyone who listens to get out and vote, ahead of the November 3 Presidential election. On the track's powerful chorus Demi sings, "Commander in Chief, honestly / If I did the things you do / I couldn't sleep, seriously / Do you even know the truth?/ We’re in a state of crisis, people are dyin' / While you line your pockets deep / Commander in Chief / how does it feel to still / Be able to breathe?”

The song was reportedly written "in an hour" according to Michaels. "We cried a little bit, we said what we needed to say and now it's out in the world."

Moments after her performance, Demi dropped the official music video for her newest single in which Americans of all ages, races and nationalities, are seen singing the lyrics as a representation of unity. Accompanied with a message from Lovato: "Please join me and vote in this year’s election. Visit https://iwillvote.com/ for more information.”

Following the single’s release, and just one day before her performance, Demi had to clap-back at some comments over her political point of view, writing "You do understand as a celebrity, I have a right to political views as well?" before adding "I literally don't care if this ruins my career. This isn't about that. My career isn't about that. I made a piece of art that stands for something I believe in."
