Justin Bieber Opens Up About 'Crazy Scary' Past Addiction

The latest revelation from his YouTube documentary series

Justin Bieber is once again revealing details about his previous struggle with drug addiction, tackling the topic during his YouTube documentary series, Justin Bieber: Seasons. The singer who is chronicling his return to music in these new episodes, reveals that the early pressures of fame turned him towards drugs, experimenting first with marijuana at the age of 13.

“It was just an escape for me. I was young. My experience was in front of cameras and I had a different level of exposure,” he says, admitting that he became dependent on the drug, and he escalated into other substances. “I was, like, dying. People don’t know how serious it got It was legit, crazy scary.”

“I basically said to myself, ‘God, if you are real, you get me through this season of stopping these pills and stuff, and if you do, I’ll do the rest of the work.’ I never did the actual work. I got off the pills but never went to the root of everything so I just circled back around which most people do.”

Last year Bieber talked in-depth about his battle with depression and addiction, offering up a lengthy post about his own journey. By 19 he admits he turned to heavy drugs, became disrespectful and angry in relationships and found himself, “hiding behind a shell of a person that I had become.”

Justin explained that it took him years to bounce back and change his habits, but he did it with the help of “extraordinary people” who loved him. “All this to say, even when the odds are against you keep fighting.”

Justin Bieber will release his new album, Changes, on February 14.
