Following the news that rapper and new mom Nicki Minaj would be skipping the 2021 Met Gala in New York City on Monday night (Sept. 13) due to vaccine requirements, news organizations quickly jumped on her tweets which stated her reason as such, opting for more research before she takes a jab. However, Minaj insists there's a lot more to the story.
After the news broke last night just as the 2021 Met Gala was getting underway, MSNBC host Joy Reid chose to call out Minaj publicly on her on The ReidOut program saying, "People like Nicki Minaj, I have to say this, you have a platform, sister, that is 22 million followers, okay? I have two million followers. You have 22 million followers on Twitter. For you to use your platform to encourage our community to not protect themselves and save their lives, my God, sister, you could do better than that," Reid said.
Reid added, "You got that platform. It's a blessing. It's a blessing that you got that. That people listen to you, and they listen to you more than they listen to me. For you to use your platform to put people in the position of dying from a disease they don't have to die from, oh, my God. As a fan, as a hip hop fan, as somebody who is your fan, I'm so sad that you did that. So sad that you did that, sister. Oh, my God."
Minaj was having none of this, and replied to Reid on Twitter saying, "This is what happens when you’re so thirsty to down another black woman (by the request of the white man), that you didn’t bother to read all my tweets." Minaj added a mocking quote, concluding, "'My God SISTER do better' imagine getting ur dumb a** on tv a min after a tweet to spread a false narrative about a black woman."
Actually looking at the latest conversations Minaj has had regarding vaccinations, as well as her already contracting COVID while on a video shoot, suggests she does in fact have a much deeper understanding of the seriousness of the pandemic than many give her credit for. You know, there's also her obvious encouragement of those who have been vaccinated, but OK.
Of course, Minaj is also happily attached at the hip to her now almost one-year-old baby boy, "with no nannies" in the mix to lighten her load. So, "One yaself," if you're mad. Nicki's got better things to do. Why not give her a hand?
