“It’s a very personal record to me,” Selena Gomez says of her new song, “Lose You To Love Me.”
The touching and tremendous ballad released last week marks the official return of the singer, set to begin a new era, 4 years after the release of Revival. In the time since Selena has overcome quite a bit, and it’s soaked into every sentence of the song.
“I wanted to get out a lot of the feelings that I was experiencing, but in a way where it was, more saying I’m frustrated and I’m feeling these things and it’s complicated but I’m okay with closing this chapter and I’m okay with moving forward,” Gomez explains in the exclusive RADIO.COM interview above. “Which is something I’ve had a hard time with in the past.”
First written a year ago, “Lose You To Love Me” speaks for Selena now more than ever, offering people a peek into her own life and a message of hope. “I wanted it to be a declaration of where I am, and hopefully for other people who have experienced what I’ve experienced, just to know that feeling is valid,” she adds. “Hopefully they can feel peace about that.”
Many people have, with the song quickly becoming a quotable, aching anthem for so many who have felt that kind of heartbreak. It rings so true because of the authenticity and sincerity of Selena who breathes emotion into each line, having lived it.
“I would say a powerful lyric that was crazy when we were in the studio was probably, ‘you sang off-key on my chorus, when it wasn’t yours,’” Gomez says, recalling writing sessions with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. “I think that metaphor applies to so many different things, especially when you are a woman, and you’re trying to figure out things that are happening and it can be frustrating and you could be torn down. My self-esteem was completely ripped from me, and I think that everyone can understand that. So that was a very powerful line for sure.”
Thankfully Selena survived, evidenced by the empowerment banger released one day later, “Look At Her Now.” Surprising fans 24 hours after the release of “Lose You To Love Me,” the upbeat and bright track appeared to be just as much a thank you to fans as a way of letting them know that everything is alright. “Here’s my special gift to all of my ride or dies,” Gomez wrote as she revealed the song. “I created this especially for you. Y’all have been through it all with me and I thank you for pushing me to be the best.”
The one-two punch is a perfect preview for Gomez’s upcoming third LP, just the beginning of a busy year for one of the most important voices in all of pop music.
“There will be a lot more coming this year, with music and stuff that I’m doing with my fans. Creating things” she laughs and smiles. “It feels good to be back, and I’m grateful that I had time for myself and get to be a part of other things while I was out of the light.”
“I’m happy to be back.”
