Shawn Mendes has never been one to hide his struggles with anxiety, but a new experience in his relationship with Camila Cabello has reinforced that it’s a lifelong process.
Mendes took part in an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe and discussed how his anxiety recently led to difficulty in his relationship. "I went through a month where I couldn't really even communicate with her because I was struggling with anxiety, and I didn't want her to see me weak," he said.
"And I was on the verge of ruining our relationship. And then when you come out on the other end, and you're like, ‘Listen, I'm struggling here. It's hard for me to even say this to you.' And everything starts building and growing and getting stronger, and the roots fortify, and you look around, and you're like, ‘Oh, s***.' Bravery. That's bravery. That's strength."

As Shawn began to open, he and Camila came up with a plan that would help the two of them. The couple “started giving ourselves a lot more time,” Mendes said. “Which then allowed us to give everything more time and space, if that makes sense."
Mendes said this is the first time he’s fallen in love and it’s provided him and Cabello a valuable lesson.
"It really allows you to be like, ‘Okay, well, if I'm going to do this, I might as well be doing it for the right reasons and really, really, really enjoying it,'" he said. "Otherwise, I'd just rather watch movies with you all day."
