The pair teased the single earlier in the week confirming the song would drop on Friday. Well, Friday is here, and so is “Stay.”
The Kid LAROI took us inside his collab with Justin Bieber as he told Audacy’s Julia that it was a long time coming. “When he sent me the song ‘Unstable’ I was like, ‘f*** I gotta send him back something from my s***,’ cause I was trying to get him on my thing,” he says.
“I was scrambling through my notes and I came across ‘Stay,’ which is an idea I had for some months that I just started one day when hanging out with a couple of friends and never really thought much about that.”
LAROI had the foundation for “Stay” for some time, which he loved, but knew that it “needed a lot of work” before he could put it out. As he kept coming back to the song, he thought Bieber “would sound really good on it.”
“I sent him that [‘Stay’] and sent him another song. He was really stuck on ‘Stay’ and everytime I would see him he’d be like ‘yo this ‘Stay’ song is special man, this song is special,’” LAROI said. “Eventually I just pulled up on him in the studio with the files and was like ‘hey man, ready to record?’”
When LAROI took to social media to tease the single, he let fans know it wasn’t just going to be the song that was released. Instead, he referred to it as “‘STAY’ THE MOVIE.”
The video, directed by Colin Tilley, is a full cinematic experience. “I usually have ideas for music videos,” LAROI says, “but for this one I had no idea where the music video was going to go for this. I couldn’t think of anything for the life of me.”
“I have been a big fan of Colin Tilley videos for a long time,” he added. “It was a really professional set, I felt like I was on a movie set.”
It’s certainly an exciting time for LAROI and fans will be pleased to know he has more music on the way.
He’ll be dropping the next line in his F*** Love mixtapes when he drops F*** Love 3 “sometime this month,” but it’ll be awhile before we get a proper album release. “The album will probably be dropping next year.” LAROI said he’s still in the process of making the album and has “quite a bit to go.”
“It’s going to be my first album and I want it to be great and perfect. I don’t want it to sound like f*****g 14 songs slapped together.”
