Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal Reflect on Nick Cordero, Calling Him ‘One of the Great Ones’

The Broadway star will not be forgotten

Broadway star and Tony-nominated actor, Nick Cordero passed away on July 5th at the age of 41 due to a tumultuous battle with COVID-19. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, both Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal shared sentiments and love for Cordero.

In 2018, the Broadway actor appeared in a stage adaptation of A Bronx Tale. De Niro and Rosenthal who had directed and produced the original film, were also involved with the musical version and worked closely with Cordero.

“…We were just blown away by how beautiful his voice was and how much his physical presence and magnetism felt like Sonny's. And, after we cast him, he just got better and better — he was perfect, and such a lovely guy,” De Niro and Rosenthal candidly share.

The Bullets Over Broadway star was healthy and young. De Niro and Rosenthal mourn that fact that this may have never happened were it not for the mismanagement of the pandemic in the U.S. and explained their frustrations. “If President Trump had heeded the warnings he was being given — if he and his administration believed in science, fact and telling the truth — this might never have happened; the way Trump has handled this crisis has been appalling and surreal.”

Like many others in the industry, the two powerful Hollywood icons warn us that “being young and healthy” does not protect us from the virus. De Niro and Rosenthal urge everyone to continue to wear masks and tell us, “nobody deserves to have to go through what Nick did.”

Finally, the two reflect on memories of Codero singing the song, "One of the Great Ones" from A Bronx Tale. De Niro and Rosenthal are in agreement that Nick truly was one of the great ones and that there was no better way to describe him.

A Gofundme page has been set up for Cordero’s wife, Amanda Kloots and his son Elvis. See here.
