Coaches Stunned by Chair Malfunctions on 'The Voice'

The chair has a mind of its own!

Kelly Clarkson wasn’t expecting a malfunction when she turned her chair for one contestant on “The Voice.”

On Monday’s episode, Clarkson hit her button to spin around for contestant Samuel Wilco after he wowed her with his cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Lately," but as she spun around and stood to applaud, her chair malfunctioned and turned right back around to face the audience, nearly knocking her over.

Clarkson was surprised as she shouted, “Quit messing with me! I'm in heels!”

Nick Jonas' chair also malfunctioned, but he seemed unfazed.

While Clarkson initially seemed to think she was being pranked by Blake Shelton, when a stage-hand came out to assist the judges, she realized it was an accident. Shelton and John Legend got a good laugh anyway.

Once the situation was resolved and Clarkson’s chair was adjusted to normal, she took a more serious tone telling Wilco that she loved his song choice, adding that if she ever had to re-audition, her song choice would also be “Lately.”

“It’s my jam, I love that song,” she told him.

Clarkson is all too familiar with the auditioning process after her audition on “American Idol” in 2002.

Her audition tunes -- Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and Etta James’ “At Last” -- impressed judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson, and well, the rest is history.

But despite Clarkson’s best efforts (which included almost tumbling out of her chair), Wilco chose Jonas as his coach, a decision inspired by his wife and kids who love him.

The choice isn’t permanent as all “The Voice” fans know. Clarkson can always scoop him back up if he’s eliminated in later rounds or steal him from another team per the official game rules.
