For nearly 18 years, Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg teamed up to host the wildly popular sports morning drive show "Mike & Mike." The show was a perfect mix of opinion and information, stuff that wasn't too heavy as you woke up to start your day. Golic, who spent eight years as a defensive lineman in the NFL, was a great contrast with Greenberg, who, well, was an accomplished journalist that didn't appear as though he ever stepped near a football field.
The contrast in life experiences and future goals, though, perhaps contributed to an ugly end to the show, with the two reportedly not on speaking terms - other than when broadcast to millions of listeners - in the waning months of the show.
Nearly three years after the show ended, have the two made up?
"It did not end well, that's pretty much been public," Golic said on Pardon My Take. "I was surprised it ended. The guy who was running ESPN at that time, John Skipper, ended it, and Greeny wanted to go do his own thing. So I was surprised it ended, and obviously it's been pretty documented that I didn't like the way that it ended. I would say, Greeny and I, we've seen each other since, but he does the morning show with "Get Up" and I was doing the morning show, so we would have really no interaction in the morning. We always lived far away from one another, and outside of Mike & Mike, we never really hung out. His kids weren't even born when we started the show, so we never really had a lot in common, and I think that's one of the things that helped make Mike & Mike work a little bit, is that we were so different. We have seen each other at Super Bowls - we're cordial, but that's pretty much it. In all honesty, there really isn't much of a relationship anymore. It's a shame, but that's just the way it goes sometimes and that's where it is now. Who knows what the future holds, but right now, that's pretty much where it is."
Mike & Mike ended November of 2017, with Greenberg departing to host ESPN's new morning studio show "Get Up." Golic stayed behind to continue hosting mornings with Trey Wingo, which ran through July of 2020. Golic, though he continues to hint at a desire to eventually return to morning radio, is returning to a role as a studio analyst for ESPN's coverage of college football. Greenberg continues to host "Get Up," and began a new radio program earlier this month that airs from 12-2 on ESPN Radio.
Golic's wife, Christine, says that Golic offered to be Greenberg's co-host again, but ESPN chose not to go in that direction.
