Hunter Pence gave his all on the field and beyond, helping the San Francisco Giants to World Series championships in 2012 and 2014. Now, a few years removed from his playing career, Pence has a message for the Giants.
The Giants have reportedly considered trading starting pitcher Carlos Rodon. Rodon is 9-6 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.07 WHIP after seven shutout innings on Sunday night.
Pence joined Audacy’s Garlic Fries and Baseball Guys and gave his take on the looming MLB trade deadline.
“You can’t buy-sell. To me, you have to trade Rodon if you’re not in on this year,” Pence said (2:35 in player above). “But when you trade Rodon, it’s a ripple effect and a message no matter what you get back if it helps for now, you’re not going to win a World Series.”
The Giants are 51-52 through 103 games, 4.5 games back of the third Wild Card spot. If they can make a push with Rodon, they'll have a great pitching duo for that three-game series.
“We have a Carlos Rodon and a Logan Webb, who you can step into the playoffs and be like ‘This is our number one. This is our number two. Come and get some. Come and get some!’” Pence said.
“You trade Rodon, you lose that,” he continued. I don’t care who you get, do not do this buy-sell thing. I am so passionate about this.”
Pence mentioned that teams don’t get chances like this with a one-two pitching punch very often. The team has great leadership and a great coaching staff, Pence said, so go and get it.
“Send them a message that we believe,” Pence said. “We can make this happen. We can make up this ground. I know we can. I know we can.
“Do not do the buy-sell thing. If you trade Rodon, trade everyone and we’re gonna have to do some big deals in the offseason. But that ain’t it to me. You don’t get opportunities to make the playoffs all that often, especially with a Rodon and a Logan Webb,” Pence said. “You have a great opportunity this year if you ask me.”
