Tyreek Hill's Ex-Fiancee Refused to Speak to NFL After Full Audio Release: Rapoport
Tyreek Hill's ex-fiancee Crystal Espinal would not speak with NFL officials for a league investigation into child abuse allegations against the Chiefs wide receiver, according to Kansas City 610 Sports Radio's "Show & Vern."
In an exclusive interview with the station, sports reporter and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shed light on the NFL's Friday morning decision not to suspend Hill.
"They talked to Tyreek Hill. They did not talk to Crystal Espinal, who did not make herself available for interviews," Rapoport revealed.
Rapoport said he "wasn't completely surprised" by the NFL's decision, which came after a full, unedited audio recording revealed Hill for the first time publicly denying a 2014 domestic violence incident with Espinal.
"We all, meaning the public, kind of knew that whatever happened in 2014, Tyreek Hill did it. Then you hear him directly ask his fiancee on that audio, basically get her to admit, or at least not deny, that she made it up," said Rapoport.
Rapoport recalled the exchange caught on tape. "[Hill] literally says in the audio, 'Did I ever hit you?' And [Espinal] won't answer. And then he says, 'Yes, I picked you up and put you outside the door, but you know that I didn't do it.' And she changes the subject."
When asked what influence the audio had on the NFL's decision, Rapoport said that at the very least it "really does make you rethink what you heard and what you thought you knew about Tyreek Hill."
When asked how the NFL's decision on Hill compares to their recent Ezekiel Elliott decision, Rapoport said they're not comparable. "I know that Zeke Elliott wasn't charged," he said. "But the NFL looked at everything they could, including conversations with Zeke Elliott, including looking at metadata, cellphone pictures, timestamps and all that stuff, and they determined that he did it. And they determined that Tyreek Hill did not do it."
Rapoport said the NFL's decision made sense, according to the evidence available.
"There's a lot of people on all sides who are probably happy this is over," he said. "Not everyone's happy with the conclusion. But this is someone the Chiefs have stood behind from the absolute very beginning. And based on the NFL's conclusion, they were right in doing so."
