NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Gillian's Wonderland Pier on the Ocean City Boardwalk will shutter after 94 years of countless cherished memories.

The announcement came in a letter from current operator Jay Gillian, posted on Facebook Friday.

Gillian said after 47 years of working at the Boardwalk, he had "little choice" but to retire, saying the amusement park was no longer a viable business.

"It's been my life, my legacy, and my family. It's sad to let go,” he said.

Gillian said the pier's multi-year lease will terminate in a couple months.

Wonderland and 6th Street Pizza, also owned by Gillian, will stay open through Indian Summer Weekend, which runs from Oct. 6 - 8, to give everyone enough time to use up their remaining tickets for the park.

Gillian no longer owns the property. He says he cannot speak for its future.
