The Guardian recently coined Shenseea the next big crossover artist, referring to her debut as “unabashedly risque.” On ALPHA, the Jamaica-born singer experiments with different genres, but stays true to her roots. Offset, Sean Paul, and Beenie Man are also featured collaborators on the new project.
“When I go to make a song, or try to catch a vibe on a beat… being from Jamaica I have a vision and I will not lose myself to get that vision,” Shenseea told MTV in an interview for March’s Global Push Artist. “I still try to infuse a bit of my Patois in my music, and it’s what makes me unique and it’s what makes my sound.”
Growing up, Shenseea listened to numerous R&B stars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Chris Brown. Interestingly, she was introduced to reggae artists such as Lady Saw and Vybz Kartel later in life, during her high school years. Merging R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, Reggae, and Dancehall created a blueprint for Shenseea. Prior to receiving mainstream recognition, the 25-year-old artist was widely popular in the Dancehall circuit. A few years ago, she gained traction with the braggadocious “ShenYeng Anthem.”
Earlier this month, the Interscope Records signee performed her Pop-inspired single “Deserve It” on Jimmy Kimmel Live, marking her first late-night TV performance. Shenseea’s new album ALPHA is available now on all streaming platforms.
