Justin Fields is reportedly looking likely to become a backup quarterback and the Philadelphia Eagles are a team mentioned as a possibly landing spot.
During the 11am hour of the 2024 94WIP Birds Town Hall live at MaGerk's in Horsham, Eliot Shorr-Parks, James Seltzer, Joe Giglio and Hugh Douglas debated the merits of the Eagles bringing in Fields to backup Hurts.
"On the face of it, I think the Eagles are smart to prioritize the backup quarterback position," Seltzer said. "They won a Super Bowl because they do it, so I'm always down to get a better backup quarterback. I don't know the dynamics in the locker room and with Jalen the same way Howie does.
"I'm torn on it. I lean yes if I believe Jalen can handle it because I do think it is a smart football decision. And I believe in Hurts. I do think Hurts is going to be OK, I think he is going to be good and I think he is mentally strong."
"It is unfair to Jalen Hurts to put Justin Fields on this roster," Shorr-Parks disagreed said. "The last time we tried to see if a quarterback can handle it, it didn't go well.
"You don't think there are going to be calls for Justin Fields? Why do that to him?" Shorr-Parks asked.
"Because they need an insurance policy!" Giglio said.
"What about it potentially motivating him?" Seltzer said. "How do you know that Jalen Hurts won't get better? How do you know Jalen won't be like, 'Alright, I'm going to use it [as motivation].'"
Fields, 25, struggled in his first three NFL seasons completing just 60.3-percent of his passes while throwing 40 touchdowns to 30 interceptions going 10-28 in 38 starts.
Fields has been dynamic as a rusher, rushing for 2,220 yards over 38 games, including 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games in 2022.
In 2024, Fields will earn a base salary of $1.6 million while carrying a cap hit of $6 million and a dead cap value of $6 million, per spotrac. He has a 2025 fifth-year team option for $25.6 million.
Earlier this week, former Eagles backup QB Marcus Mariota signed a one-yeal deal with the Washington Commanders worth $6 million and potentially up to $10 million with incentives.
