The Eagles plan to promote quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator if Steichen does indeed depart, Adam Schefter reported earlier this week.

The Hiring of Steichen marks the second consecutive time the Colts have tapped an Eagles offensive coordinator for their top job, after bringing in Frank Reich in 2018.

Steichen, 37, is in his second season as Eagles offensive coordinator. Prior to that, he spent seven years with the Chargers, serving in several roles, including offensive coordinator in 2020.

This season, Steichen has presided over one of the best offensive units in the NFL, while quarterback Jalen Hurts blossomed into an MVP candidate. The Eagles finished third in both yards and points per game, while sending six offensive players to the Pro Bowl, including Hurts, running back Miles Sanders, wide receiver AJ Brown, and offensive linemen Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Landon Dickerson.

Steichen's duties include playcalling, which he took over from head coach Nick Sirianni about halfway through the 2021 season.
