The Eagles are moving quickly to fill their defensive coordinator vacancy, as CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports the Birds have requested permission from the Seahawks to interview associate head coach Sean Desai for their DC position.
Desai, 39, started his coaching career in Philly, spending 2006-10 at Temple as a defensive and special teams coach under Al Golden, getting his doctorate in educational administration there in 2008. He followed Golden to Miami in 2011 as the Assistant Director of Football Operations, and after one year there and one at Boston College, he started his NFL career in 2013 as a defensive quality control coach with the Bears.
He spent nine seasons with the Bears, including 2021 as the defensive coordinator, before joining Pete Carroll’s staff last year as a defensive assistant and associate head coach.
Desai is the only person of Indian descent to serve as an NFL coordinator, and he’s reportedly the second name in the running for the eagles’ DC job, as the Eagles are also reportedly interested in Vance Joseph, who the Cardinals’ DC last year but was let go Friday after the team announced former Birds DC Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach.
Whomever replaces Gannon in Philly has a tall task, as the Eagles ranked second in the NFL in total defense and first in pass defense in 2022.
