Jason Peters was one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL during his prime. He started his career in Buffalo for five seasons before anchoring the Eagles’ offensive line from 2009 to 2020. Peters played well enough last season in Chicago, but the 40-year-old offensive tackle is showing his age in Dallas this year.
The Cowboys signed Peters less than a week before the start of the season. He started on the practice squad before playing in Weeks 3 and 4.
Former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus of the Audacy Original Podcast “Love of the Star” said that he thinks we may have seen the last of Peters in Dallas, if not the NFL.
“I’m starting to have my doubts about Jason Peters playing,” Broaddus said (14:46 in player above). “I don’t think he’s playing as well and (Connor) McGovern has not been bad. (McGovern) was not great against the Commanders, but he was one of your better blockers in the Rams game. This game, it’s a struggle sometimes but he’s not terrible.”
McGovern has been holding his own as the starting left guard this season with Tyler Smith posted at left tackle. Peters was signed as some extra depth and has only played 35 offensive snaps in two games while dealing with a chest injury.
“I think we’ve seen the end of Jason Peters. I really, really do,” Broaddus continued. “I don’t know if he’s really healthy but also think he’s 40 years old and last year I felt like he gave you something but you know what with the way they’re playing at left tackle, the way that McGovern’s playing at left guard, you know what, I can’t put Jason Peters in the lineup right now. He doesn’t look as good as he did when he was playing with Chicago.”
With the Cowboys expecting to get some players back soon, Peters could be the odd man out.
“They might need a roster spot. I wouldn’t be one bit surprised if all of a sudden that they start getting some guys back healthy and they need a spot that maybe Jason Peters is that guy that gets moved on,” Broaddus said.
The lineman’s decorated career could be coming to an end soon. Peters is a nine-time Pro Bowler and won Super Bowl LII with the Eagles.
