Jason Kelce on Jalen Hurts: 'Handling the blitz phenomenally'
Jason Kelce believes Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is playing at a high level through three games this season, doing an excellent job with new center Cam Jurgens picking up blitzes.
"I think Jalen has performed really well," Kelce said during his weekly Thursday morning in-studio hour long appearance from 7:30-8:30am on the 94WIP Morning Show. "I know the turnover thing is still there because he's had three [turnovers] in the last two [games].
"All in all he's making really good decisions, he's leading the team, he's more comfortable, he's more poised. They're handling the blitz phenomenally—this is going to be the toughest test they've had this season with [facing Tampa Bay Bucs head coach] Todd Bowles, who can come after the quarterback better than pretty much anybody. I think he's playing really, really good right now."
Previously, Hurts said on 94WIP that he has more responsibility in picking up blitzes and pre snap reads with Kelce no longer on the team. The Eagles are tied with the third fewest sacks taken in the NFL with just four through three games.
Kelce also commented in Eagles' offensive lineman Tyler Steen and Fred Johnson, who both played excellent in Sunday's win over the Saints replacing injured lineman in Lane Johnson and Mekhi Becton.
"I could not be more proud of both of those guys," Kelce said. "I mean, just played so great...It's hard to go in a middle of a game...and play at the level at which they did. In past years when Lane Johnson has gone down, it has crippled us."
Kelce also spoke about Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who is taking a lot of heat for his controversial fourth down decisions against the Saints.
"His job is to organize everything," Kelce said of Sirianni. "He's making all of these decisions...he's overseeing all of it...He makes critical decisions when it means the most and by and large he gets those really, really right.
"I'll say this whole heartedly, he's the best team meeting coach I've ever been around...He would hold guys accountable...
