40% chance of tropical storm development in the Gulf

The National Hurricane Center says there is a medium chance of a tropical depression or tropical storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico next week.

"An area of cloudiness and showers has developed over the Bay of Campeche and the adjacent land areas," the NHC said in the Tropical Weather Outlook.

Forecasters say slow development of this system is possible over the next several days as it moves slowly.

They expect that movement to be erratic.

"A tropical depression could form in this area by the middle of next week.  Due to the slow motion, regardless of development, heavy rainfall is possible over portions of Central America and southern Mexico."

The chance of development over 48 hours is low at 10 percent.

"Formation chance through 5 days...medium...40 percent."
