Coronavirus Survivor Shares Alarming Body Transformation Photo While in the Hospital

A man who was hospitalized for six weeks with COVID-19 shared alarming before-and-after photos to let people know how the novel virus can affect the body.

Mike Schultz, a 43-year-old nurse from San Francisco, had no underlying conditions before contracting COVID-19. He weighed about 190 pounds and worked out daily.

After testing positive for coronavirus, he dropped 50 pounds from his muscular frame. Schultz shared the shocking two images to his 30,000 followers on Instagram. One picture was taken a month before he tested positive, and the other, showing off his emaciated physique, was taken while hospitalized.

He captioned the photo, “I wanted to show everyone how badly being sedated for six weeks on a ventilator or intubated can be.”

Schultz wanted to show that the virus can happen to anyone. He said it does not matter if you are young or old, or even have preexisting conditions. The nurse didn’t think he would experience severe conditions.

“I thought I was young enough for it not to affect me, and I know a lot of people think that," he said.

He shared that he was exhausted just standing up to take the shocking photo.

“I was so weak. This was one of the most frustrating parts,” he added.

Schultz said that he couldn’t even hold his cellphone because it was so heavy. When a friend or family member texted him, he couldn’t type because his hands shook so much.

The nurse went to the hospital on March 16 after returning from Miami Beach with his boyfriend. The couple went to a festival where at least 38 people tested positive for the illness, and three men died.

While Schultz wound up being intubated for four-and-a-half weeks, he has since recovered. After being released from the hospital, he celebrated getting his appetite back by heading to McDonald's.

“It did taste different. I think lost some of my taste,” he said, “but it was good.”
