Leonardo DiCaprio Bonds With Greta Thunberg, Calls Her ‘Leader of Our Time’

Two of the world’s most popular environmental activists joined forces on Friday.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio met 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg as she was in Los Angeles to speak at a Youth Climate Strike protest outside of City Hall as part of the Fridays for Future climate change protests that have occurred in recent months.

DiCaprio, 44, has been one of Hollywood’s most vocal voices against climate change and protecting the environment for several years. Thunberg became a public figure back in September when she delivered a speech at the UN on climate change.

When DiCaprio posted the photo of himself with Thunberg on Instagram, it generated plenty of attention, garnering 3.9 million likes as of Saturday morning as he lauded the young activist.

“There are few times in human history where voices are amplified at such pivotal moments and in such transformational ways – but @GretaThunberg has become a leader of our time,” he wrote in the caption. “History will judge us for what we do today to help guarantee that future generations can enjoy the same livable planet that we have so clearly taken for granted. I hope that Greta’s message is a wake-up call to world leaders everwhere that the time for inaction is over.”

Thunberg’s speech at the Youth Climate Strike protest demanded that California Governor Gavin Newsom act immediately to phase out fossil fuel production on the state, which is one of the largest oil-producing states in the country.
