CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The labor market is still tight and hiring experts said you can cash in on the red hot job market.

Rick Cobb, founder of the Chicago-based workplace consulting firm Two Discern, told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that it is important to have a concrete offer in place from a new employer before negotiating salary and benefits.

Cobb added that you can get a better deal out of your current employer, just as long as you know your value on the open market.  He explained that it could be as simple as looking up salary information on job websites like glassdoor.

Cobb also stressed that it is important to have a certain mindset before entering a negotiation.

"If you view the negotiation, whether it is an opportunity to go work somewhere or an opportunity to improve your situation where you are, treat it as a relationship. Which means there are two people in it, if not more, and try to make it as much of a win-win as possible," Cobb said.
