Facebook Considers ‘Kill Switch’ to Turn Off Political Ads After Election: Report


Facebook is considering a number of steps to protect against the spread of misinformation in the upcoming election, including a “kill switch” to turn off political advertising after the election, according to a new report.

The social media giant is preparing for several different contingency and post-election scenarios that include President Donald Trump or his campaign using the platform to delegitimize election results, anonymous individuals with knowledge of the plans told New York Times.

According to the sources, the company is bracing for possibilities that include Trump wrongly claiming that he won another term, attempting to invalidate results by undermining the USPS and its ability to deliver mail-in ballots, or that other groups tampered with results.

Facebook is holding daily meetings that involve CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other top executives to help ensure that the platform is not used as a tool to dispute results of the Nov. 3 vote.

One of the options include a “kill switch” that will turn off political ads attempting to spread misinformation after Election Day. Currently, the platform does not monitor its ads for accuracy.

The reports after Facebook and other social media companies came under sharp criticism for their role in the spread of misinformation and alleged foreign meddling in the 2016 election.

A spokesperson for Facebook declined to comment on the company’s alleged strategy to NYT.

“We continue to plan for a range of scenarios to make sure we are prepared for the upcoming election,” he said.

The White House said that maintaining the legitimacy of the election is a priority for the president.

“President Trump will continue to work to ensure the security and integrity of our elections,” WH spokesman Judd Deere told NYT.
