Fauci: COVID will continue to affect lives unless ‘overwhelming majority’ of people take vaccine

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been continually giving reliable advice and educating the public on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nation’s top infectious disease expert has now warned that COVID-19 will continue to affect lives unless an “overwhelming majority” take the vaccine, CBS News reported. Fauci also urged Americans to get vaccinated if they want to be “part of the solution” to the global outbreak.

During a Facebook live stream with CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Fauci urged the public to receive a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as it is available.

“So, if you want to be part of the solution, get vaccinated and say ‘I’m not going to be one of the people that is going to be a stepping stone for the virus to go to somebody else, I’m going to be a dead end to the virus,’” Fauci said.

On Wednesdy, it was revealed the United Kingdom will become the first country to authorize Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. The rollout is expected to begin as early as next week.

While in the U.S., New York state is set to receive its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines on Dec. 15, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

In November, Fauci shared that it will still be essential to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow COVID-19 guidelines after a vaccine becomes available in the United States.

The disease expert urged Americans not to forget about all public health measures after the vaccine is accessible.

“Because even though for the general population it might be 90 to 95 percent effective, you don’t necessarily know for you how effective it is,” Fauci said.

Fauci explained that once he receives a vaccine, he still will pay attention to guidelines for slowing the spread of COVID-19.

“I can feel more relaxed in essentially not having the stringency that we have right now, but I think abandoning it completely would not be a good idea,” Fauci said.
