Though the calendar says summertime just began this week, the season-specific heat has been burning up cities all over the country for weeks, and Mother Nature has really turned up the thermostat in recent days.

A “heat dome” is set to settle in on large swaths of the U.S. this week, with most of the country seeing temperatures in the 90s and many hitting triple-digits, meteorologists warn.

As many as 100 different city records for high temperatures could be broken across the nation over the course of the week.

A forecast map posted to Twitter over the weekend by the National Weather Service showed a blanket of orange and red covering America from sea to shining sea weeks ahead of the upcoming July 4th celebrations.

Those colors represent temperatures considered to be above normal. The NWS also posted helpful tips about what to do if you find yourself overheated.
