Man wins lottery jackpot on grocery trip to buy mac and cheese

Sometimes a grocery run can change your life.

One North Carolina man’s hankering for mac and cheese led him to fortune when he won a $200,000 lottery jackpot prize on a scratch-off purchased at the grocery store.

Marquetton Carraway bought the ticket on a trip to the store to pick up ingredients to make mac and cheese, he told North Carolina Education Lottery officials.

Carrraway bought both the food and a $5 Mega Bucks scratcher at a Madison Market Grill in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

He didn’t scratch the ticket until he got home, at which point he realized he had won the $200,000 top prize.

After winning the prize, the first thing the man did was call his mother.

"At the time, she was on a business call,” he said: “And I told her that her business was now over.”

Carraway told officials that he has plans purchase a house with his prize winnings, and to treat his family.

Carraway emphasized that his instinct to round up mac and cheese ingredients at the store was the same one that led him to buy the ticket while checking out.

"I was actually going to the store to by macaroni and cheese to cook,” he said. “When I got to the counter, the man gave me my change and I was about to walk out the store until something told me to, ya know, buy a ticket.”

Carraway didn’t specify whether he got around to making the mac and cheese that night.
