Mattel is celebrating inspiring women of the past by adding Helen Keller as the latest Barbie doll.

Helen Keller, who was famously known for her incredible achievements despite being blind and deaf, is the latest historical figure to be memorialized by Barbie, Mattel announced on Tuesday.

"We are excited to welcome disability rights advocate, author and educator Helen Keller to our expanding Inspiring Women collection as Barbie continues to highlight strong female role models," Lisa McKnight, Mattel's senior vice president and global head of Barbie and dolls, said in a statement.

"Representation comes in all forms and we recognize that the blind and low vision community is often overlooked, with their stories going untold. We hope that by introducing children to Helen Keller's story of perseverance and determination, they will be inspired to dream bigger than ever before," McKnight added.

The company teamed up with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to not only ensure the dolls authenticity, but also make the toy accessible to the blind/low vision community, People Magazine reports.

The doll includes braille on the box packaging, as well on the book accessory held by the doll.

“As the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, Helen broadened society’s view of what’s possible, and proved that there’s no limit to what we can do when we work together toward a more inclusive world,” Barbie captioned a series of photos posted to the company's official Instagram account.

“If you use a screen reader, you may have noticed some recent changes in the way Barbie posts. We’re excited to continue expanding our capabilities as we strive to build content to better serve the full spectrum of abilities.”

Earlier this year, Mattel released a doll inspired by the poet Maya Angelou as part of the Inspiring Women series. Previous dolls in the collection include Ella Fitzgerald, Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks.

The dolls are currently on sale at retailers nationwide and on Barbie.com.
